Cervical Screening & Cancer e-Atlas

Trent Cancer Registry and the National Cancer Intelligence Network (NCIN) are pleased to announce the release of the new Cervical Screening and Cancer e-Atlas. This has been commissioned by the NHS Cervical Screening Programme (NHSCSP).

The aim of this e-Atlas is to provide the public, health care professionals, commissioners and health service managers with the most up to date combined information on screening (coverage, timeliness and results) and cancer (incidence, mortality and survival) throughout England, in the same place for the first time.

The Cervical Screening and Cancer e-Atlas uses data from the UK Cancer Information Service (UKCIS) and cervical screening data from The Health and Social Care Information Centre.

If you have any comments or any suggestions on how to improve the Cervical Screening and Cancer e-Atlas, please do contact us .

The Cervical Screening and Cancer e-Atlas includes the following data at Primary Care Trust (PCT) and Strategic Health Authority (SHA) level:

  • Incidence and mortality data for various age ranges including the screening target age group 25-64. Years available include 1995-2008 for incidence and 2009 for mortality.
  • Screening coverage. The percentage of women in screening target age groups who have been screened in intervals of 3.5 to 5 years. Years available include 1997/98 to 2010/11.
  • Timeliness of results. The percentage of results available to the primary care organisations within 2 and 4 weeks since screening took place. Years available include 2005/06 to 2010/11.
  • Results. The percentage of women with results returned as negative, mild/borderline dyskaryosis or moderate/severe dyskaryosis. Years available include 1997/98 to 2010/11.

Also available:

  • Relative survival rates at SHA level. Cohorts include 1995-1997 to 2006-2008 for one year survival and 1990-1992 to 2002-2004 for five year survival.
  • Income score from the Index of Multiple Deprivation 2010 at PCT level. This allows a comparison of cervical screening and cancer figures for PCTs and the level of income deprivation.

Note: A discrepancy was noticed with the comparison area data in the PCT single map view. This only affected the comparison area data when the 2009/10 screening coverage: % less than 5 years since last test in the 50-64 years age group data was selected. This discrepancy was corrected on 7/12/10.

To access the e-Atlas click on either the PCT or SHA link below. Hints and tips for usage are shown at the foot of this page.

Hints & tips on how to use the e-Atlas

  • Each e-Atlas has a Help and a Notes document which can be downloaded. The Help document provides an overview of how to use the e-Atlas. The Notes provides information about the data.
  • In each e-Atlas there is a 'data' button which allows you to choose the cancer or screening statistic you are interested in displaying (e.g. mortality from cervical cancer in 25-64 year olds).
  • All data used in the e-Atlas can be downloaded in a single excel workbook by clicking on the button ‘excel data’
  • The 'filter' button allows you to narrow down the data shown into smaller areas, for example by each region, cancer network or comparing health inequality 'Spearhead' areas.
  • You can hover and click over any area on the map to select a particular locality you want to look at. This can be repeated any number of times for separate areas.
  • You can also click on any geographic name in the 'Comparison Areas' to show how the areas you have selected compare to regional and national averages.
  • The 'double map' button feature allows you to look at two different cervical screening or cervical cancer data types at once or enable a comparison between deprivation and the chosen statistic.
  • To help provide extra context and interpretation to the statistics you've chosen on the Cervical Screening and Cancer e-Atlas, there is a link to relevant sections on the Cancer Screening Programme’s website and a link to the National Cancer Intelligence Network’s National Cancer e-Atlas. To access this please click on the logo or button in the bottom right hand corner of the screen.
