Audit of weight management services in the East Midlands: Results
Rates of obesity in both adults and children have been rising steadily across the UK for a number of years, having in fact trebled over the last 20 years, with 24% of females and 23% of males now classified as obese . Overweight and obesity are defined using a Body Mass Index (BMI) calculation which is a person’s body mass (kgs) divided by height (m). Person’s with a BMI > 25 are considered to be overweight and those with a BMI of >30 clinically obese. Rates of overweight and obesity in the East Midlands are marginally higher than those in England as a whole, meaning that this is a significant health priority both nationally and locally.
There have been numerous interventions designed to combat the rising trend in overweight and obesity both in the East Midlands and nationwide. The weight management service audit has been designed in order to capture the range and scope of overweight and obesity interventions across the East Midlands and identify good practice within the region. It is also useful in identifying any gaps in capacity and ensuring that services are adequately meeting local needs. The questionnaire has also been planned to review how widely the National Standard Evaluation Framework (SEF) is being used in the region as the recommended evaluation tool for obesity intervention services.
This report aims to indentify key themes from the weight management service audit.
