Hospital Episode Statistics – interactive mapping of standard outputs
EMPHO are currently in the process of creating new web pages containing standard outputs based upon hospital admissions data. Using Instantatlas from Geowise, these outputs are available via interactive mapping software (SVG), enabling the user to view the indicators at various time periods and different levels of geography. The data is also available in downloadable spreadsheets.
The local authority indicators contain details of admissions to hospital for key diagnoses and procedures. These have been selected as they are either frequently requested, a government target or are the focus of a NSF. Each indicator provides the Aged Standardised Rate for each procedure/diagnosis by local authority of residence per 100,000 population.
Maps are available for 2000/01 to 2004/05; 2005/06 data will be added as and when it becomes available. At the moment, the DASR's are at LA level for Persons - all Ages. However, the ability to look at the data by sex, age group and PCT will be added shortly.
Please see the meta-data for further details on the rationale, sources of data and methods used.
Health warning
In a number of cases there are significant variations in admission and surgery rates between local authorities. Whilst these may reflect “true” differences, they may also reflect other factors such as differing degrees of completeness and quality of clinical coding or differences in access to health services.
It important to bear this in mind when interpreting variations at local authority level.

Please note that the maps do not currently work with the Firefox 2.0 browser.
In future we intend to include a 'how to' guide, but in the meantime please see below a list of things to try! Please email
with any comments/questions.
Things to try:
- Click on data to show a list of available indicators and select as required
- Click on time to show a list of time periods available and select as required
- Use the filter tab to show only your County
- Click on a local authority to highlight on the map and show a trend line on the graph
- Use the legend tab to change how the data are classified
- Click the magnifying glass at the side of any local authority to zoom in
- Use the mouse to draw a rectangle on the map to zoom into an area
- Use palette to change the colour scheme
- Meta-data is available by clicking on notes
- To download the data in spreadsheet format click on download data in the bottom right-hand corner
Please be patient. Loading and re-loading after changes can take a few moments and it is not always obvious that the tool is still active!
