Ethnicity and health: Background
In the East Midlands, the regional public health strategy Investment
for Health aims to improve the health of East Midlands residents by reducing
health inequalities year-on-year. One of the important dimensions of
health inequality is the inequality between ethnic groups.
In December 2003, the Investment for Health Group of the East Midlands
Assembly, the body which oversees the development and implementation
of the strategy, commissioned EMPHO and Voice-East
Midlands to jointly
undertake a regional mapping project of ethnicity and health inequalities.
The agreed objectives were:
- To review existing/current analyses of health inequalities
and/or health equity audits between ethnic groups in the Region
undertaken by PCTs/LAs/others
- To review current initiatives in the Region to address health
inequalities between ethnic groups.
- To facilitate the establishment of "Emphasis on Health
and Ethnicity" webpages and allow the sharing of the information
collated through those pages.
These pages provide a summary of work to date and a
framework which can be further populated and updated with information
and case
studies from the East Midlands and elsewhere.
The content of these pages reflect the objectives of the project:
