INFORMATION RESOURCES ON FOOD AND HEALTH

Food and health in the East Midlands

EMPHO and other regional partners are working to develop an information support package for the regional Food and Health Steering Group and the “Emphasis on Food and Health” network.

EMPHO's contribution to date includes the following reports.

Derbyshire Food and Health Needs Assessment

EMPHO have undertaken a Food and Health Needs Assessment for Derbyshire Food and Health Network, and have published the following report detailing the key steps of the process, illustrating the outputs that can be generated, and highlighting potential challenges to those wishing to undertake a similar task. It is hoped that this report will provide an insight into the practical undertaking of a food and health needs assessment in a local area and support its use as an important component in the planning of future service needs and public health initiatives.

Trends and variations in diet in the East Midlands

The report examines dietary patterns in the East Midlands population, including information on variations by gender, age, ethnicity, social class and geographical area.

Synthetic estimations of fruit and vegetable intake in the East Midlands

What are synthetic estimates?

Synthetic estimates are the expected values in an area given certain characteristics of that area and as such are the expected proportions. In order to calculate these expected values the relationship between a whole range of area characteristics (eg. age profile, deprivation scores, employment factors) and the prevalence of the lifestyle factor of interest, as measured by the Health Survey for England, was investigated. It was found that different lifestyle factors were associated with different area characteristics. Based on this knowledge of how the area characteristics are related to obesity, binge drinking etc. expected values for the local authorities were calculated. Therefore this data is a robust estimate of the prevalence of the amount of fruit and vegetables eaten in different wards in the East Midlands.

Synthetic estimates are available for every ward in the country on the National Statistics website.
