INFORMATION RESOURCES ON CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE’S HEALTH
Introduction
Nearly one quarter of the East Midlands’ population is under 16 (1,055,400 and 24%)1. Children and young people’s health is one of the most important public health priorities and it is an indicator of the general health of the population and of future health trends. Improving outcomes is challenging: to make a significant difference needs concerted and co-ordinated effort across all partner agencies at national, regional and local level2.
The aim of this section is to signpost information and resources for use in commissioning children’s services. Additions will be made to this webpage and further East Midlands data and information will be added when it becomes available. For further queries please contact

Regional context
Early Years in the East Midlands Report
This report into the early years in the East Midlands uses existing data and tools to examine the patterns in child and maternal health from pregnancy until the age of five. The report is designed to build a picture of child and maternal health in the East Midlands and to identify where areas of increased need may exist. This report should be used in conjunction with Child Health Profiles (www.chimat.org.uk) and local expertise and knowledge.
East Midlands Stillbirth Report
This report investigates the rate of stillbirth in the East Midlands following the series of articles published in the Lancet in April 2011. The Lancet articles show that the rate of stillbirth in the UK as a whole is not declining as quickly as most other high-income countries. The report will look into the rates of stillbirth in the East Midlands and compare these nationally; it will compare rates within the East Midlands at a Primary Care Trust (PCT) level and Local Authority level (LA). It will then look at many of the identified risk factors which taken together may highlight areas within the region which need further investigation.

A chapter on children and young people’s health outlines some of the main health issues within the region.

This report produced by APHO focuses on geographical and socio-economic variations and indications of child health across the English Government Office Regions and compares these with European data.
Child Poverty in the East Midlands
This webpage presents findings from exploratory research commissioned by Intelligence East Midlands (IEM), the East Midlands Regional Assembly (EMRA) and Government Office for the East Midlands (GOEM) to identify what is working in tackling Child Poverty within the East Midlands.

The Child and Maternal Health Observatory CHiMaT
The Child and Maternal Health Observatory (ChiMat) is a national public health observatory established to provide wide-ranging, authoritative data, evidence and practice relating to children, young people's and maternal health. ChiMat supports policy makers, commissioners, managers and other health stakeholders to improve decision-making for high quality, cost effective services.
This specialist observatory is part of the Yorkshire and Humber Public Health Observatory (YHPHO) which is the lead PHO for child and maternal health at a national level.

Local East Midlands Information
EMPHO has produced RAG charts for selected health indicators for children and young people. This is a useful tool for comparing data within various geographical boundaries with national and regional data as well as with data from previous years.

Examples of data from other PHOs
ERPHO
INpho series: Eastern Region PHO produced a series of indicators reports based on the 5 areas of the Every Child Matters document. Although this data is East of England only they provide a comprehensive background to the data sources available. See report numbers: 20,22,27,29,33,35
SWPHO
SWPHO have produced a mapping tool to support healthy schools implementation. The tool outlines a set of indicators about the health of children. The data is available only for the South West but gives an indication of the type of information which would be useful in planning children’s services.
