INFORMATION SIGNPOSTING FOR HEALTH INEQUALITIES

National policy and action plans

A programme addressing health inequalities in England was stimulated by the 1998 Acheson report "Independent inquiry into inequalities in health”, which triggered a series of key policy documents in the following years that have brought health inequalities to the forefront of the modern political agenda.

The archived Department of Health (DH) Inequalities website is a key resource containing historical DH publications and guidance on health inequalities including past national and local targets and action plans.

The current Department of Health Website does not have a dedicated health inequalities section (as of 11.03.2011) as in previous years, however, relevant information can be found by accessing the Health Inequalities National Support Team (HINST) section of the website.

In addition, February 2010 saw the publication of “Fair Society, Healthy Lives: The Marmot Review”, a strategic review of health inequalities in England beyond 2010. The review, chaired by Professor Sir Michael Marmot, proposed the most effective evidence-based strategies for reducing health inequalities in England beyond 2010. This highly influential review is expected to be central to current and future policy development and action to address health inequalities in England.
