Local tobacco control profiles for England
The latest version of the local tobacco control profiles have been published by the London Health Observatory on behalf of the Public Health Observatories in England. These profiles bring together a set of indicators that give commissioners and service providers up-to-date information on the health problems caused by smoking, the extent of smoking, and how services across the NHS and local authorities are tackling the issues. The data is presented in easy-to-read spine charts with maps showing variation across England.
National General Practice Profiles tool and
Disease Prevalence Estimates
The network of Public Health Observatories in England has launched the revised National General Practice Profiles tool, and updated Disease Prevalence Estimates. The National General Practice Profiles tool is a web-based tool designed to support GPs, clinical commissioning groups and PCTs to ensure that they are providing and commissioning effective and appropriate healthcare services for their local population. As envisaged in the DH news release at
http://www.dh.gov.uk/health/2011/12/gp-practice-data/ the Practice Profiles tool is an early example of a user-friendly format for viewing raw data, which is designed to support GPs, CCGs and PCTs. The Disease Prevalence Estimates has updated estimates of the prevalence of five diseases (coronary heart disease, cardiovascular disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, hypertension and stroke) with significant impact on the health and wellbeing of the population to inform commissioning of services, and to support case finding and targeting of resources. The prevalence estimates are included for the first time as indicators within the profiles tool, and are also provided as a standalone product for further uses.
Trent Cancer Registry Annual Report 2010/11
The report briefly describes some of the key activities undertaken at the Registry throughout 2010/2011 and outlines our main priorities for 2011/2012. It also highlights the current challenges facing cancer registries, following the publication of several key reports and policy documents and how we are working to meet these to further improve the quality of the service we provide to stakeholders.
Cervical screening and Cancer e-atlas updated
The Cervical Screening and Cancer e-Atlas aims to provide the public, health care professionals, commissioners and health service managers with the most up to date combined information on screening (coverage, timeliness and results) and cancer (incidence, mortality and survival) throughout England. The data in the e-atlas has just been updated to include screening coverage, timeliness and results up to 2010/11. The cervical cancer incidence, mortality and survival data have also been updated.
Health Inequalities Gap Measurement Tool
The Health Inequalities Gap Measurement Tool (the ‘gap tool’) is an accessible, web-based resource providing detailed information on the nature and extent of the health inequalities gap within and between all Local Authority and NHS areas in England. It uses population mortality rates to measure the inequality gap, and shows the differences in mortality rates within and between areas by grouping local populations according to relative levels of deprivation. It can be used to support needs assessment, service planning and commissioning to reduce health inequalities by giving users the means to: identify the causes of death with the largest inequality gaps within areas; see the age groups with the greatest absolute and relative gaps in mortality;
compare the overall mortality profiles for different areas; and view the ‘direction of travel’ for mortality rates and the local inequality gap.
